Currently I am exploring tools designed to sculpt the body through fitness use, or through other repetitive uses associated with healing, massage and physical culture.

Kate Langrish-Smith

As an artist I am interested in exploring, re-creating and activating historic and contemporary objects I have been drawn to, and that have been designed for a relationship and effect on the body. Currently I am exploring tools designed to sculpt the body through fitness use, or through other repetitive uses associated with healing, massage and physical culture. I often do this through the recreation of these forms in clay, composing and creating assemblages alongside other more ambiguous and less identifiable forms, made from other transformative materials, such as plaster, latex and silicone, as well as natural found materials. Ceramic has been a part of my practice since 2014, I am interested in its transformative nature and its plasticity, and the fact that it exists in the ground almost everywhere.

I like to play with its inherent duality - its fragility and simultaneously associated strength, its sculptural and practical applications as well as its decorative and material properties. I am interested in discussing and questioning the history, popularity, and handling of certain objects - through the movements and intentions associated with them. This may take the form of surreal and un-associated environments and materials to explore our relationships and interest in our own bodies and how we move with and around the objects and the landscape that we inhabit.

My practice allows me to explore through a female lens the relationships we have to our bodies and the myriad of objects, systems and rituals we have developed to try to understand the complex concepts and languages of beauty and aesthetics - human, man-made and natural.
